It's 97 degrees here in Hingham and I'm sitting in the living room, in nothing but a pair of shorts in relative comfort. Today is my vacation day!
Yesterday, I played a match in our Thursday night golf league against a golfer with a lower handicap. I putted like I was holding the club at the wrong end and I had no confidence at all. On the 16th hole (we played the back nine only) all that changed. I pulled my tee shot and it was at the back of the green and about 25 feet from the hole. The putt broke from left to right about 18 inches. I stoked it and then watched as it flowed across the green, approaching the hole and dropping gently into the heart of the cup. That gave me a birdie 2. I made par on the next hole while my opponent hooked his tee shot into the deep rough and ended up with a double bogey or worse. I managed to win the match by a score of 6-4 even though my raw score of 46 was one shot worse than his 45. His handicap was two shots lower than mine so I won the point for low net.
Today, I decided to go over and play the Golf Club at Camelot, a golf course near Lomira, about 45 minutes west of my home. It was very windy and very warm. I broke a chunk out of one of my teeth biting on a hard pretzel on the way over and my head ached slightly. I took two ibuprophen when I got to the course and experienced no further discomfort.
My round started out well. I parred the first two holes and managed a very respectable 42 on the front nine. I took a cart because of the heat and that was a very good decision. I never would have lasted all 18 holes had I walked. My driving was very good on the whole and I was on the fairway on nearly every hole. But my highlight for the day came on the 17th hole. Uncharacteristically, I hooked my drive into some pine trees to the left of the fairway. All I could do was chop a 5 iron about 30 yards out near the fairway. The pro and two other players had passed me on the 11th hole and I kept up to their threesome throughout the back nine. They were very good players and I waited until they left the 18th tee before I hit my third shot at the 17th. I didn't want them to see in case I hit an embarrassing shot. I paced off the distance. It was 67 yards. There was a very strong wind blowing from right to left. I chose my new 60 degree lob wedge. I took a full swing and hit the ball perfectly solid to the right of the hole. The green was well above me and I watched as the ball came to rest on the green, trickled from right to left about 6 feet, AND DISAPPEARED INTO THE HOLE!!!!! Not another living soul saw it. I hollered out a few jubilant expressions and took my time going to retrieve the ball. Yes, there it was, at the bottom of the cup. I plucked it out without moving the pin.
On the final hole, I hit a low pull and it ended up about 160 yards from the green with a strong wind at my back. I hit a low six iron which landed on the green and rolled off the back. I used the lob wedge again and pitched the ball up short of the cup. It rolled past the hole about a foot. I tapped in for a final par. My score on the back nine was 43 so I ended up with a very respectable 85 on a course I had never before played. When you hit the ball as consistently as I am lately, it doesn't matter where you play as long as you know your distances.
It was a wonderful round of golf on a very hot, very windy day. I did not have to wait for other golfers nor did I hold anybody up. I consider such days among the best of my life. This is what I love to do and I am so grateful to God for the opportunity to do what I like.
Thank you for sharing this little bit of my life. I look forward to three days of work this next week where I get to deliver new Macintosh Mini's to faculty members who aren't present. Thursday, we leave for Toronto and the International AA Convention. We return on Sunday and then Monday is my birthday. I'm off that whole week so I look forward to more chances to play golf at one of the many great courses near me.

So many ideas. So little ambition. That about sums it up. Need to keep my secret longings a secret. Ack! I can't even say that without inviting curiosity. Don't look behind the big green curtain.
Not enough ambition to write. Work is fun. Lots of Macs to play with. Deadlines met and passed. Now is the fun time. Still some hills to climb. I will get to the top. Think I'll take a few steps right now......http://www.bombich.com here I come.
